FAQ
Why use Free and/or Open Source software ?
Well the reasons are very compelling.
The first thing most people think when then encounter FOSS for the first time is 'free as in cost' - 'so I do not have to pay money for my software license any more?' is a common thought. Well this is ture in most cases but the real benifits of FOSS are much more profound - its all about freedom!
Here a list of some of the benefits of using FOSS:
- Freedom
FOSS is software that is 'free as in freedom'. There are many different types of FOSS licences but on the whole they give you freedom to:
- to run a program for any purpose
- study the source code and how a program works
- improve or change the program and release those improvements
- redistribute copies of a program
- Cost
Althought not always ture, the acquisition of FOSS generally invloves no cost as FOSS licenses do not demand a license fee.
- Community support
Behind every piece of Free or Open Source software you will generally find an active community of developers and users.
